Our Story

Origin

Juniper Southern Colorado (formerly Pueblo Rape Crisis Services) was initially a grassroots effort led by a group of community members who recognized the need to address the issue of sexual assault and rape. A small grant was written to provide crisis intervention and advocacy, primarily to women who had experienced sexual violence. Over the ensuing decades, the group became more solidified and at various points in time operated under the umbrella of the suicide prevention office and the child advocacy center.

Why Juniper?

In 2001, it was decided that Juniper SoCO should become its own 501(c)(3), utilizing the official name Pueblo SANE/SART, Inc. It was later decided that doing business as Juniper Southern Colorado made more sense for community recognition. Juniper SoCO now provides case management, and community prevention education, and has a crisis hotline that is staffed 24/7 with trained advocates. We serve 450 individuals annually.

The Future

We are currently working to identify our new strategic direction. We know we will be leaning into prevention education, especially for young people. We also aim to strengthen how our entire community uses trauma-informed, healing-centered approaches in our work. Stay tuned as we figure it all out and please reach out if you’d like to join us.
